US President Donald Trump sees an opportunity in the instability in Bangladesh and the weak interim government there. Trump is now planning to build a resort on Bangladesh’s St. Martin Island. According to sources, in late September, Chief Advisor to the Bangladesh government, Mohammad Yunus, met Trump in New York. During this time, the two leaders discussed the resort plan. Yunus later met with Trump’s Special Advisor for Asia, Sergio Gor. St. Martin was also discussed there, and the proposal to develop the island as a resort was finalized. According to reports, Bangladesh’s interim government will lease St. Martin Island to the US for 99 years. A special zone for foreign nationals will be created there. The lease to the interim government will not require parliamentary approval, as Bangladesh’s parliament is currently suspended.
