A mid-air scare occurred on Air India flight AI-117 from Amritsar to Birmingham on October 4th, when its Ram Air Turbine (RAT) was deployed. The RAT is an emergency system used to provide hydraulic and electrical power. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner made a safe emergency landing in Birmingham and is grounded for investigation. The core question is why the system activated, as Air India maintains that post-landing checks found all electrical and hydraulic components were normal. An official in the broadcast noted, “deployment of RAT is an emergency measure that the craft automatically takes on.” This makes the unexplained activation a serious event. The incident is especially concerning as the same type of engine was deployed moments before an Air India crash in June, and the aircraft, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is the same model. This puts airline safety protocols under scrutiny.
