This special report covers the formal request by the Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA India) for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to reverse its extension of flight duty hours for Boeing 787 pilots. ALPA India has warned that the decision ‘creates a scenario ripe for fatigue induced errors’. The pilots’ body is protesting the DGCA’s move to increase the flight duty time limit from 10 to 10.5 hours and the total flight duty period from 13 to 14 hours for two-pilot operations. ALPA India argues this exacerbates fatigue, a problem already heightened by a safety mandate that restricts pilot seat recline on the 787, compromising in-flight rest. The association is demanding an immediate withdrawal of the extension and has called for mandating a three-pilot crew for all flights exceeding eight hours until the seat issue is resolved.
