A massive fire broke out on 26 November in a residential complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po area, killing at least 44 people and leaving more than 270 missing. The blaze, considered one of the city’s worst in decades, spread rapidly through buildings covered with bamboo scaffolding where maintenance work was underway. Firefighters managed to control the flames in four of the eight blocks by Thursday morning, while efforts continued in the remaining ones. Police have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter. Over 900 residents have taken shelter in temporary centres as authorities investigate how the fire spread so quickly.
