In this Sumbawa Documentary I take you on a journey across one of Indonesia’s most overlooked islands.

Sumbawa is often described as “the true Indonesia” — far less developed than its famous neighbors and still largely free from mass tourism. This Sumbawa documentary aims to show the island’s raw beauty, its cultural and religious roots, its coastal traditions, and the everyday life of the people who call this place home. From famine-resistant jungle agriculture to coral-grown islands, from seaweed farms to surf culture, this film showcases a side of Indonesia most travelers never see.

This Sumbawa Travel Documentary is part of my Documentary Series called „Indonesia is not only Bali“. While many visitors mainly focus on Bali alone, Indonesia — with its more than 17,000 islands — offers a wealth of incredible destinations, each with its own character, culture and landscapes.

Over the past episodes, I explored Java, Bali, Flores, Komodo, Lombok and the Nusa Islands. Now I travel deep into West Sumbawa during rainy season — visiting the region of Alas, Kertasari and Sekongkang — to show the true off-the-beaten-path Indonesia, far away from the crowds.

You can use this Sumbawa Documentary to plan your own trip. In my Travel Planning Kit you’ll find detailed itineraries for Java, Bali, Lombok, Flores, the Nusa Islands and Sumbawa, including all accommodations, restaurants, sights and activities featured in this film and beyond.
