On December 13, 2025, a lone ISIS gunman ambushed US and Syrian forces in Palmyra, central Syria, killing two US Army soldiers and one civilian interpreter, while wounding three other American service members. The attack occurred during a counter-terrorism meeting supporting ongoing operations against ISIS.

President Donald Trump mourned the loss, calling the victims “three great patriots” and confirming “very serious retaliation” against ISIS. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth condemned the attack. This is the first deadly attack on Americans in Syria since Bashar al-Assad’s fall in late 2024. The new Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa (former HTS leader) has cooperated with the US-led anti-ISIS coalition, with HTS delisted as a foreign terrorist organization earlier in 2025. The gunman was killed by partner forces. Injured personnel were evacuated to al-Tanf base. Despite ISIS’s territorial defeat in 2019, remnants remain active in Syria’s deserts.
