An unusual scene unfolded in Odisha’s Sambalpur where an airstrip was converted into an examination centre to accommodate nearly 8,000 candidates applying for just 187 home guard posts. The recruitment drive, conducted by the Sambalpur police on December 16 for 24 police stations across the district, was held at the Jamadarpali Airstrip. Officials said the overwhelming number of applicants posed a logistical challenge, prompting authorities to use the airstrip runway to ensure smooth arrangements. In other districts, similar examinations are usually conducted in stadiums or large playgrounds. The incident highlights both the scale of participation and the pressure on recruitment infrastructure for government jobs.
