In a significant development ahead of the Maharashtra civic polls scheduled for January 15, the ruling Mahayuti alliance has secured 68 seats unopposed. India Today’s Dipesh Tripathi reports that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leads the tally with 44 unopposed victories, followed by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena with 22 and the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP with two. The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has alleged that the ruling combine used ‘money power and muscle power’ to force rival candidates to withdraw their nominations. The withdrawals occurred on the last day of nomination, prompting claims of coercion from parties including the Congress, UBT Sena, and MNS.
