Irfan Sotlani, a 26-year-old Iranian protester from the Karaj region near Tehran, has been sentenced to death amid the massive nationwide anti-government protests sweeping Iran. Arrested on January 8 for participating in demonstrations against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s rule, Irfan faces execution reportedly scheduled for January 14, 2026. Human rights groups say he has been charged under Iran’s controversial waging war against God’ law, denied basic legal rights including access to a lawyer, and his case has sparked international concern as it could mark the first official execution linked to this protest movement demanding political reform and greater freedoms. Global rights organizations and advocates are calling for urgent action to halt the execution and defend fundamental human rights.
