The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition by Justice Yashwant Varma challenging the legality of an inquiry committee formed to investigate serious corruption allegations against him, following the discovery of burnt currency notes worth crores at his residence in March 2025. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and S.C. Sharma ruled that the Lok Sabha Speaker committed no illegality in constituting the committee, rejecting Justice Varma’s argument that the process was void because the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Narayan Singh, had previously declined to admit the impeachment motion. By upholding the committee’s validity, the court has cleared the way for a formal investigation under the Judges (Inquiry) Act 1968, marking a critical step in a lengthy legal process that could ultimately lead to impeachment proceedings in Parliament.
