A container ship was hit by a projectile early Wednesday morning off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the British military, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre issued a warning stating that the attack occurred off Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE’s northernmost emirate on the strait. The extent of the damage remains unknown and is currently under investigation by troops. Following the incident, ships in the strait have effectively halted all traffic through the waterway, which serves as the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global chokepoint through which a fifth of all oil and natural gas traded worldwide passes, making this disruption significant for international energy markets.
