Iran’s leader Mojtaba Khamenei has announced that the Straits of Hormuz must remain closed, following escalated attacks in the region. Three tankers have been attacked by Iran, including one US tanker. Around 28 Indian vessels are currently in the region, with uncertainty over their safe passage through the strait. Some vessels are positioned in the Gulf of Persia on the western side of the Straits of Hormuz, while others are in the Gulf of Oman on the eastern side. India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart Syed Abbas Araghchi regarding safe passage for Indian ships. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson confirmed the discussion. Two tankers, Pushpak and Parimal, have successfully crossed the Straits of Hormuz. India is coordinating with partner countries to work out mechanisms for safe passage, including potentially escorted passages. Dubai has also been hit by Iraqi missiles amid the escalating regional tensions.
