The Congress high command has selected V.D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Keralam, prioritizing public sentiment over the backing of Members of Legislative Assembly. Despite K.C. Venugopal receiving support from over forty of the sixty-three Congress MLAs, the party leadership chose Satheesan, recognizing his role as the face of the opposition against Pinarayi Vijayan and the Left Front government over the last five years. Satheesan, a six-time MLA who has never held a ministerial position, also received backing from alliance partners like the Indian Union Muslim League. K.C. Venugopal remains in Delhi as a trusted loyalist of Rahul Gandhi, with discussions suggesting he could potentially succeed Mallikarjun Kharge as Congress President next year. Meanwhile, senior leader Ramesh Chennithala is being considered for the role of Assembly Speaker rather than Deputy Chief Minister. The decision establishes a strong leadership trio for the Congress in South India, alongside Revanth Reddy in Telangana and Siddaramaiah in Karnataka.
