At the G7 Summit in Evian, France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of the recent deaths of three Indian sailors. Speaking while seated next to US President Donald Trump, PM Modi highlighted that the sailors lost their lives during a United States attack in the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasised that disruptions to maritime trade in the region severely harm the global economy and stressed the urgent need to ensure the safety of seafarers. PM Modi stated that protecting shipping routes and the civilians who navigate them is a shared global responsibility. Furthermore, he addressed the current global trust deficit among nations, quoting former US President Ronald Reagan’s phrase, ‘Trust, but verify.’ PM Modi also warned against the misuse of technology to spread mistrust. He reiterated that peace in West Asia is essential for global stability and called for international solidarity to secure maritime routes so seafarers can perform their duties without fear.
