India may soon see polymer notes in ₹10 and ₹20 denominations as the government has approved the RBI’s proposal for field trials. But what exactly are polymer notes, why are countries like Australia, Canada, and the UK already using them, and will India’s existing currency become obsolete? In this episode of Kharcha Pani, Shruti explains how Indian currency is currently made, why our notes are made from cotton instead of paper, how plastic notes use advanced security features like transparent windows to make counterfeiting much harder, why India first considered them back in 2012, and what has changed now. We also break down the RBI’s concerns over fake currency, the economics of replacing worn-out notes, the advantages and challenges of polymer currency, and whether these new notes could eventually become a part of your wallet. Watch till the end to understand everything about India’s next big currency experiment.
