The Centre has opposed petitions in the Supreme Court seeking an income-based sub-quota within SC, ST, and OBC reservations. In its affidavit, the government argued that reservation is based on historical social and educational backwardness, not economic status alone. It also opposed extending the creamy layer principle to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, citing previous Supreme Court judgments. The petitions were filed after the apex court’s 2024 ruling allowing sub-classification within SC/ST categories by states under certain conditions. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter on August 18, making it a significant constitutional and reservation policy debate.
