Protests have erupted at IIT Delhi following the death by suicide of 31-year-old MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar on August 22. Students are demanding 1 crore rupees compensation for his family, the resignation of senior student affairs officials and the physics department head, alongside an independent investigation. His family alleged that the administration failed to respond to requests for accommodation and academic support. In response, IIT Delhi announced a five-member inquiry panel including former Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar and AIIMS psychiatry head Professor Pratap Sharma. The institute also announced financial assistance and a mentorship system, but students rejected the administration’s response as inadequate.
