Nepal is facing a serious flash flood situation, with the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) also being discussed.
GLOF occurs when a glacial lake suddenly releases a large volume of water, often after its natural dam fails.
Rising temperatures, melting glaciers, landslides and unstable moraine dams can increase the risk of such events.
A sudden GLOF can send huge amounts of water downstream, threatening villages, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.
Here’s why GLOF is being discussed in connection with the Nepal Flash Flood and what it means.
