A sudden flash flood hit Nepal on August 26, causing the Trishuli River to rise by nearly 9 metres in just 30 minutes. What triggered this extreme event? Possible causes include a debris flow, ice-rock avalanche, or a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). Climate change, fragile Himalayan geology, landslides and unplanned construction can amplify such disasters. India’s Himalayan regions have witnessed similar tragedies.
