Nepal Flood Rescue: Hundreds of workers are feared trapped inside tunnels of hydropower projects in Nepal after devastating floods and massive landslides blocked tunnel entrances and filled passages with mud, rocks and debris. As rescue operations continue, India’s ‘Rat Miners’ have stepped forward to offer their expertise.
These are the same Rat Miners who played a crucial role in the 2023 Silkyara Tunnel Rescue in Uttarakhand, where 41 workers were trapped underground for 17 days. When heavy drilling machines struggled to clear the debris, the Rat Miners entered through a narrow passage and manually removed rubble using their hands and small tools, helping create the final route to the trapped workers.
But what exactly is Rat Mining? Why can these workers be useful in tunnel rescue operations? And can the experience that helped save 41 lives in Silkyara help rescue workers trapped in Nepal? Watch the full report to understand the story.
