A multi-storey building collapse in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan has resulted in seven fatalities, prompting the arrest of the building owners under charges of culpable homicide and negligence. According to the FIR, four illegal floors were added to a decades-old structure, and workers dismantled a load-bearing basement pillar during renovations. Following an investigation revealing structural dampness and safety hazards across local paying guest accommodations, five Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials were suspended, adjacent damaged structures were vacated, and a ten-day structural audit of student housing was ordered. The incident triggered student protests over a lack of Delhi University hostel accommodation and issues reclaiming security deposits from landlords.
