Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Tukaram Munde discusses extreme markups on hospital consumables and regulatory actions taken by the agency. A survey across hospitals revealed pricing differences ranging from 150 percent to nearly 2,800 percent between trade procurement costs and maximum retail prices for inpatient items like IV sets and nebulizers. Munde stated that these profit margins fail to reach patients, noting that items procured for 11 rupees carry MRPs around 325 rupees. The Maharashtra FDA has formally written to the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority and the Department of Pharmaceuticals, proposing trade margin reviews, transparency, and stronger monitoring under relevant drug pricing frameworks. Munde emphasized that policy interventions require consultations across pharma manufacturers, hospitals, and consumers. Addressing the recent suspension of Mumbai’s Cafe Mondegar, Munde clarified that the establishment’s licence was suspended due to non-compliance with mandatory Schedule IV food safety regulations, stressing that public health standards remain strictly non-negotiable.
