Today is Muharram, and on this occasion, there is bad news for those who have converted to Islam. This news is not for Muslims in general; rather, it specifically concerns those who converted to Islam but continue to avail themselves of government welfare schemes and benefits. The Madras High Court has ruled that an individual cannot be classified as belonging to a ‘Backward Class’ after converting to Islam; they are simply a Muslim. The Court delivered this verdict while hearing a petition filed by a man named Sameer Ahmed. Sameer Ahmed was born into a Hindu family and was originally named Param Shivam. After converting to Islam, he applied for an ‘Other Backward Class’ (OBC) certificate. The administration rejected his application, prompting him to approach the Court to challenge the decision.
