Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Delhi; his plane landed at Palam Air Force Station around 3 AM today. Putin is visiting India for the BRICS summit, but prior to that, a crucial meeting and dialogue are scheduled for today, September 11, between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Putin. The meeting will address several major issues aimed at further strengthening strategic, defense, and economic ties between India and Russia. The discussions are expected to focus on three key areas. Defense tops the list, specifically the deal for the Sukhoi-57; substantive talks regarding the acquisition of 75 fifth-generation fighter jets may take place. Additionally, the delivery of the S-400 missile defense system and defense cooperation concerning nuclear submarines could be reviewed. The second key point of discussion will be crude oil; India has clearly stated that it will decide where and how much oil to purchase based on its own requirements. Given the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz, India aims to secure its crude oil supplies, and there is talk of a potential long-term agreement with Russia in this regard. The third major point concerns trade in local currencies; the Kremlin has indicated that both nations will hold significant discussions on promoting payments in their respective national currencies—the Rupee and the Ruble—to reduce reliance on the US dollar, a move that might not sit well with several major nations. Furthermore, the two leaders will discuss the fight against terrorism, space cooperation, curbing drug trafficking, and the International North-South Transport Corridor.
