LIVE | Aasan Bhasha Mein | If reservation is meant to benefit every community equally, then why are some ahead of others? In 2017, the Modi government formed the Rohini Commission under Justice G. Rohini to examine the distribution of OBC reservation benefits. On paper, everyone is equal. But in reality, some communities have benefited far more from reservation than others. This raises an important question, Can there be equality without equal access to opportunities?
A few communities have captured a larger share of jobs, education and other opportunities, while others continue to remain behind. The same gap exists within SC and ST communities. Musahar, Valmiki, Madiga and Mala communities, for example, do not have the same social and economic position. In 2004, the E.V. Chinnaiah case treated SCs as one homogeneous group. But in 2024, the State of Punjab v. Davinder Singh case, the Supreme Court allowed states to provide preferential treatment to the more disadvantaged groups within the SC category.
Several states have since attempted to divide their SC quota into sub – categories. But the bigger question is, can sub – categorisation within SC, ST and OBC reservations make reservation more equitable? Watch the video to understand the issue. And if you find it useful, share it with your friends and family.
