Mustafabad, an assembly constituency in North-East Delhi, was among the three-seats won by the BJP in 70-member Delhi Assembly. The result came as a surprise for many considering the Muslim majority population here.
Mustafabad area mainly comprises unauthorised colonies and majority of the population here is of lower middle class people. With overflowing sewers and unpicked garbage dumps, the civic issues in Mustafabad are very basic. Essential things like roads, street lights and sanitation are missing. The drains overflow into the roads. Quality of life is pathetic in these unauthorised parts of Delhi. Yet, one could sense a strong hint of polarisation in Mustafabad.
There is a three-dimensional contest in Mustafabad. Jagdish Pradhan, the incumbent MLA, is contesting again on a BJP ticket. AAP has fielded Haji Yunus, who was defeated by Jagdish Pradhan in 2015 Delhi Assembly Polls. Third main candidate in Mustafabad is Ali Mehdi, son of former Congress MLA Hasan Ahmed.
Union Home Minister and former BJP President Amit Shah came to Mustafabad on January 24, 2020. During the public meeting, Local BJP leaders gave slogans like ‘Ali vs. Bajrangbali’ from the stage.
