Jallikattu, a traditional bull taming sport of Tamilnadu, is an essential part of Pongal festivities. In Jallikattu, a bull is released into a crowd of people. Human Participants, also called bull tamers, try to grab the bull while the animal attempts to escape. For Tamil people, Jallikattu is a symbol of their culture and traditions. The practice of Jallikattu has long been contested. People supporting animal rights argue that Jallikattu is cruelty to animals. The bloody and dangerous nature of Jallikattu is also a point of contention. However, for the people of Tamilnadu, Jallikattu is a proud symbol of Tamil spirit. For Tamils, Jallikattu is a symbol of bravery and manliness. During our ground coverage of Tamilnadu, Team Lallantop reached Madurai. Madurai, famously called the cultural capital of Tamilnadu, is also the centre of Jallikattu events. Here in Madurai, Team Lallantop met with a bull tamer named Mani Ratnam. Mani Ratnam was a champion of Jallikattu. In 2013, he got injured while participating in Jallikattu and lost his one eye. After the unfortunate accident, Mani Ratnam started training bulls.
