Mauritius gained independence from Britain in 1968. Indigenous people from the Chagos islands were displaced and sent to Mauritius and Seychelles to live in poverty and dire conditions. The US established its military base on Diego Garcia, which later became the launching site of attacks during the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan and Iraq. Later, the CIA used this base for interrogating suspects of the 9/11 attacks.
Mauritius is claiming sovereignty over Chagos, but Britain refuses their demands. Three international agencies have declared the British occupation illegal. ICJ had suggested ceding the control to Mauritius. But, Britain refused to do so.
