In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about history of Ukraine and Russia. In 1640’s Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky started Cossack uprising against Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. To save themselves against Polish attacks, Khmelnytsky initiated talks with Tzar of Russia. Pereyaslav Council was started on the initiative of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky to address the issue of the Cossack Hetmanate with the ongoing Khmelnytsky Uprising against Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The talks concluded with the Treaty of Pereyaslav (also known as March Articles or Pereyaslav Agreement). The history of this treaty is contested as on its basis Russia call for a historical union of Ukraine and Russia, while Ukrainians see the event as initiation of Russian occupation of Ukraine.
