Hackers earned a record $40m in 2020 for reporting software flaws via a leading bug bounty reporting service. HackerOne said nine hackers made more than $1m each after it flagged their findings to affected organisations. Many of those involved work part-time and are based in dozens of different countries including the US, Argentina, China, India, Nigeria and Egypt. A growing industry that allows security researchers to hack into organisations software – with their permission – and then report the weaknesses they discover in return for a financial reward. It’s a different way of approaching computer security, but one that is proving increasingly popular. One key feature is these security researchers will approach a target from the same perspective as a potential attacker.
