Mamikhan Umarov, a former Chechen rebel living in exile and a critic of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, was assassinated in Austria on July 4. Mamikhan Umarov used to post videos on Youtube criticising Russian President Vladimir Putin’s confidant Ramzan Kadyrov. Austrian police has arrested two Russians over the killing of Ramzan Kadyrov’s critic Mamikhan Umarov. According to the reports published by Austrian media, this could be a case of political assassination. In the last few years, several Chechens living in exile have been attacked. Many of the attacks have been linked to Russian security agency FSB. According to the reports published by investigative journalism website Bellingcat, preparation for some of these murders were directly supervised by FSB’s elite group Vympel unit.
