The Supreme Court on 09 January refused to entertain a public interest litigation challenging the setting up of committees by some states to examine if the Uniform Civil Code can be implemented. The top court held that the state governments have the power to do so. During a brief hearing, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said, “The constitution of a committee by a state in itself cannot be challenged since states have the power to do so.”
