In this episode of Duniyadari, we will talk about US shot putter Raven Saunders who won silver medal in Tokyo Olympics. Raven who is nicknamed ‘Hulk’ due to her Hulk themed masks and coloured hairs, crossed her arms in an “X” gesture during the medal ceremony at the Olympic Stadium. The gesture was in support of all the oppressed people according to Raven. The history of protest at olympics goes back to the 1968 Mexico Olympics at which two African-American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, each raised a black-gloved fist during the playing of the US national anthem. After this event, Smith and Carlos were heavily criticised and ostracised by the US sporting establishment. Them and their families received abuse and death threats. Australian athlete, Peter Norman who was sympathetic to their cause, was also reprimanded by Australian sports authorities. He too was criticised and ostracised by conservatives in the Australian media. We have come long since then but civil rights all over the world are still being trampled and crushed.
