On Saturday, China’s health authorities confirmed the first two Covid-19 deaths since January 2021, as the country confronts its deadliest pandemic in two years, fueled by a surge in the highly transmissible Omicron form. Both deaths, which occurred in northeastern Jilin province, increase the total number of coronavirus deaths in China to 4,638.
