Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to weaken into a deep depression over the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat by Friday midnight, said the India Meteorological Department. So far, two people — a cattle-rearer duo of father and son — were killed in the cyclone and another 22 people have been injured. State officials said around a thousand villages in Gujarat have lost electricity supply after the electric poles were damaged by the winds. The cyclonic storm made landfall near Jakhau Port from 6.30 pm on Thursday and the process continued till 2.30 am on Friday. The landfall process has been accompanied by heavy rainfall in Gujarat and rainfall warnings have also been issued for Rajasthan. The authorities in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are on high alert even as the cyclone is on its way to recede.
