A U.S. soldier have been detained by North Korea on 18th July after crossing into the country while on a tour of the heavily fortified Joint Security Area at the border with South Korea. The Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea is known as one of the most dangerous places in the world. The soldier was being escorted back to the US for disciplinary reasons before he turned around at the airport and joined a border tour. A witness who was part of the same tour group tells CBS the soldier laughed before running towards North Korea.
The news followed an announcement by the U.S. that it had sent a nuclear-armed submarine to South Korea for the first time in more than four decades.
