Tarikh Episode 672

In this episode Nikhil talks about The NASA space pen, often associated with the myth of exorbitant spending, was not actually developed by the space agency. Instead, the “space pen” was invented by Paul C. Fisher, a private-sector entrepreneur. Fisher invested over a million dollars of his own money to create a pen that utilized pressurized nitrogen to force out a specialized gel-like ink. This pen, known as the Fisher Space Pen or AG-7, was capable of writing in various conditions, including upside down, underwater, and even in the extreme temperatures of space (-50 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit).
NASA adopted the Fisher Space Pen after thorough testing, purchasing 400 of these pens at a discounted price of just under $2.39 each. Contrary to popular belief, NASA did not spend millions or billions on developing the pen. The agency had initially used pencils, but the drawbacks, such as breaking and generating fragments that could damage equipment, led to the search for an alternative. The Fisher Space Pen provided a reliable solution, and versions of it are still available today, embodying precision and functionality for writing in challenging environments.
