Columbus landed in Haiti in 1492. He’s revered as an explorer but he has a dark past of the exploitation of Haitian people through slavery. Countries like France and Spain are equally culpable. Colonists gathered the natural resources and it can be said that they looted these countries. In recent times, Haiti, especially Port-au-Prince has been marred by gang wars, massacres, and poverty. Gang violence has increased since the 2016 election when Jovenel Moise was elected as president. That year saw a lot of protests by the Haitian people. Throughout the world, colonial history is full of tragedy and exploitation of colonized nations. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are examples of this.
