Masterclass: Myanmar Military Rule and its Impact on India.
In this episode, Saurabh Dwivedi discusses the Military Junta of Myanmar and its impact on India. Myanmar army did a military coup in the early hours of February 1st, 2021. The army arrested elected leaders like Aung Sang Suu Kyi and others and then announced a nationwide emergency. Despite the restrictions and violence, People continued to protest and kept criticising the Army. Thousands have been locked in jail and many killed in the broad daylight. Recently, Four democracy activists were hanged for their anti-military demonstrations. One of them was a former parliamentarian. He was a close ally of Suu Kyi. Capital punishment is legal yet rare in Myanmar. The previous capital punishment did happen some three decades before.
Myanmar shares a border of 1643 kilometres. Whatever happens there impacts India on its north-eastern border and the regional as well as national politics of India.

The expert for this week’s masterclass is Harsh V. Pant. He is the Vice President – Studies and Foreign Policy at Observer Research Foundation, New Delhi and Professor of International Relations, King’s India Institute at King’s College London.
Professor Pant has been a Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore; a Visiting Professor at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; a Visiting Fellow at the Center for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania; a Visiting Scholar at the Center for International Peace and Security Studies, McGill University; and an Emerging Leaders Fellow at the Australia-India Institute, University of Melbourne. Professor Pant’s current research is focused on Asian security issues.
