In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the first Girmitya labourers reaching Mauritius on a ship named Atlas in 1834.
These were 36 impoverished men from Bihar and Bengal reaching Mauritius to work as indentured labour. Over 2 million Indian travelled to 20 European colonies including Mauritius till 1910. Indentured Labour started in 1834 when British parliaments abolished slave trade by passing the Slavery Abolition Act. To Compensate for lost labour, Indians were taken on ship to Mauritius. The agreement had a clause that these people could return after 5 years but they weren’t allowed to return later on. What was the future of these Girmitya Jahazi?
