Politicians across party lines demanded the government take back the Padma Shri bestowed on actor Kangana Ranaut after she triggered a controversy by describing India’s Independence in 1947 as ‘bheek’ or alms. Ranaut also claimed that India attained freedom only after 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power. After this statement of Kangana, there was a strong reaction of the leaders and the people. People started demanding to take back the Padma Shri award given to Kangana recently. Nawab Malik, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and minister in the Maharashtra government, demanded that the Padma Shri be taken back from Kangana. Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma termed the remarks made by actor Kangana Ranaut as outrageous and said the President should take back the Padma award given to her.
