A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook northwestern Nepal just before midnight Friday, killing more than 150 people with dozens more injured.
Officials said the death toll was expected to rise as rescuers searched the Himalayan villages where communication was cut off.
Thousands of villagers slept outdoors in the bitter cold after the deadly earthquake destroyed or damaged several homes.
Rescuers were rushing aid to villages, but operations were hindered by the fact that many areas could only be reached by foot.
Many of those injured were being treated at a regional hospital in Nepalgunj.
Earthquakes are common in mountainous Nepal.
