Two years after the tornado outbreak that killed dozens and leveled much of the real estate in Mayfield, Kentucky, many people are still living through another, slower disaster — the search for housing.
Some spent months crashing with family or friends and still haven’t found a new permanent home. Others found themselves pushed out of undamaged houses due to rising rents.
Experts say struggles like theirs will only happen more often as climate change causes more disasters, which have been shown to drive up housing costs and evictions. Academics point to a relief system in the United States that is relatively well-equipped to get aid out in the immediate aftermath of disasters, but is not designed for the long-term or the worsening conditions wrought by global warming. Stacked on top of that crisis is another intractable problem: the dire lack of affordable housing across the country. They’re calling for supporting more climate-resilient affordable housing development before disaster strikes.
