Episode No: 953

This episode begins not with war drums, but with whispered conspiracies within the Mughal court. It’s the story of Abul Fazl—historian, philosopher, and Akbar’s most trusted advisor—who was brutally assassinated on the orders of Akbar’s own son, Salim.
We journey through the rise of Abul Fazl: born into a scholarly family, his intellect and vision soon earned him a place in Akbar’s court. His magnum opus, Akbarnama, chronicled not just the emperor’s reign, but the complex interplay of power, politics, and philosophy in the Mughal empire. Influenced by thinkers like Ibn Arabi, Suhrawardi, and Indian traditions, Abul Fazl represented a rare synthesis of thought.
But power breeds envy. As Salim—later Jahangir—grew restless for the throne, he saw Abul Fazl not as a scholar but as an obstacle. Convinced that Abul Fazl was manipulating his father against him, Salim orchestrated a chilling conspiracy. In 1602, on a journey from Deccan to Agra, Abul Fazl was ambushed and beheaded by Rajput commander Veer Singh Bundela.
The episode delves into the psychological turmoil of Salim, the imperial heartbreak of Akbar, and the lasting legacy of Abul Fazl. Jahangir would one day confess that the murder was his deepest regret—a reminder that the road to power is often paved with irreversible sins.
