In a landmark development, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has started its long-awaited disarmament process, ending over four decades of armed conflict with the Turkish state. On July 11, 2025, a symbolic ceremony was held in Sulaimaniyah, northern Iraq, where 20–30 PKK fighters burned their weapons rather than surrendering them to any authority. The event was conducted under tight security and marks the beginning of a phased disarmament expected to continue through the summer.
