Tarikh | Episode 1020 | 14 July 2025
Manual scavenging in India is rooted in the ancient caste system, forcing certain groups into this dehumanizing labor.
This practice was institutionalized during British rule and continued despite India’s independence and constitutional ban on untouchability.
Reformers like Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj worked to uplift these marginalized communities.
Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, was deeply moved by the plight of manual scavengers, inspiring his work.
Despite laws enacted in 1993 and 2013 to prohibit manual scavenging, it persists, leading to deaths and severe health issues for those involved.
