On the morning of July 25, 2025, a rape convict named Govindaswamy escaped from Kannur Central Prison after cutting through the iron bars of his cell. He was serving a life sentence for the brutal 2011 murder of Soumya, a 23-year-old woman who was attacked on a moving train, thrown off, raped, and later killed.
His escape triggered a major manhunt and raised alarming questions about prison security in India. Though he was caught within hours near a well close to the jail, the incident brought the focus back on one of Kerala’s most disturbing cases.
In 2016, the Supreme Court controversially dropped rape charges against him citing lack of evidence, despite medical reports indicating brutal injuries. Legal experts like Gautam Bhatia called this “illogical” and highlighted deep flaws in our justice system when it comes to gender-based violence.
