Rajendra Chola was a powerful South Indian emperor who expanded the Chola empire significantly.
Rajendra inherited a strong foundation from his father, Rajaraja I, and became co-regent in 1012 CE.
Rajendra Chola launched successful military campaigns, including a famous northern expedition to the Ganges, earning him the title ‘Gangaikond’.
He built the majestic Gangaikondacholapuram Temple, home to South India’s largest Shivling, and shifted the capital there.
His formidable navy dominated the Bay of Bengal, enabling conquests of Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Indonesia (Srivijaya Empire).
Rajendra Chola’s reign established the Chola empire as a vast and respected Hindu power, documented through copper plates and temple inscriptions.
