In a direct message amid a trade talks deadlock with the United States, Prime Minister Modi has emphasised an ‘India first’ policy. Speaking from Kashi, the Prime Minister stated that while the world economy is going through a tumultuous time and countries are shielding their own economies, India must also protect its economic interests. He called for a national pledge for ‘Swadeshi’ (indigenous goods), stating, “we will buy those things which have been made with the sweat of an Indian.” The address promoted the ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives as a push towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India), especially for farmers and small-scale industries, as India aims to become the world’s third-largest economy.
