US President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on India, warning that this is just the beginning. In a White House press briefing, he said India should expect “a lot more secondary sanctions” in the coming days. Trump accused India of taking unfair advantage of the war in Ukraine by buying cheap Russian crude and selling it in the open market for profit.
The Government of India has condemned the move, calling it arbitrary, unjust, and unreasonable. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the country is purchasing oil based on market dynamics to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens and that such purchases are completely legal. India also pointed out that several Western countries, including the US and EU nations, continue to import energy products from Russia.
